Ok, I’m off on a rant again. I don’t usually like to bring my liberal politics into this forum but yesterday’s news has me scratching my head once again with our national leadership. The United States Senate voted to re-authorize the two decade old act that has shielded millions of women from abuse and help reduce national rates of domestic violence. The bill will now move on to the House. The Senate voted overwhelmingly in a robust bipartisan majority of 78-22. What amazes me is the fact that 22 people, (all men and all GOP members) would cast a nay vote on the issue. So then I had to do a little research. And so I found it. The renewed form of the Act gives new assurances that gays and lesbians, immigrants, and Native American women will have equal access to the anti-domestic violence programs.
So now I get it. It’s not that these men voted ‘nay’ necessarily for the Anti Violence Act against women. It’s just that they had reservations about the fact that it would be extended to people of alternative lifestyles, from foreign countries, or the original Redwoman. So now it makes sense to me. Their logic was that the Act if fine if only extended to women who are straight, born in America, and not of Cherokee, Sioux, Apache, or any other tribal descent. “This makes perfect sense.” said no one ever.
Doesn’t it just boggle you mind?
